‘You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore’
The biggest event in ocean rowing
– a challenge that takes rowers 5,000 km across the Atlantic to finish in Antigua. The annual race kicks off in early December, with up
to 35 teams competing from around the world.
The teams battle sleep deprivation and the other physical and mental extremes that the race entails. Rowers are left with their own thoughts, a vast ocean and the task of getting the boat safely across to the other side.
“Why?” is the question that often comes up when we say that we are going to row across the Atlantic. Well, why? It’s hard to put into words… It’s a feeling that’s been dormant for a long time. A sense of doing something far beyond your comfort zone, the desire to do something great, a challenge – both physically and mentally – that we never thought we would take on. Back to basics, get to know yourself and each other even better and see whether we are still on the right path in life or not… We hope with this challenge to inspire others to jump in at the deep end and seize opportunities, big or small.
Besides taking on this big challenge for ourselves, we row for less fortunate children. We want to raise as much money as possible for Het Vergeten Kind and the Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur, because we think it is extremely important that every child can participate. In the Netherlands 100,000 children do not grow up safely or lovingly. Het Vergeten Kind is committed to these children by giving them positive experiences with real attention. In addition, there are 2 to 3 children per class who live in a family with money worries. They cannot participate in street dance, judo or music lessons; they often play alone. The Jeugdfonds pays the contribution or tuition for these children. We are goingto raise a mega amount for these great causes!
December 2023 is now boldly circled in our agenda: we, the Blue Atlantics, will then be at the start of the greatest adventure of our lives!
